Since coming to college, Ash Wednesday has become my favorite day of the church year, probably because Concordia's chapel service is so impressive. All the theology professors dress in their cassocks--a striking visual to start. Then, everyone comes to the altar for the imposition of ashes and individual absolution. Add a bell choir and chorale arrangement of Psalm 51, and you've got yourself a powerful chapel.
Lent comes at the perfect time of the year. It's right in the middle of spring semester, otherwise a bleak, dreary five months that drag on and on and on and on. But Lent gives me something to look forward to every Wednesday, giving me the chance to reconnect with the LORD and remember all the wonderful things he has done for me, all the people he has put in my life, and how lost I would be without him...

wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow."

I agree. I always liked the Ash Wednesday chapel service the best.
It's good for me to be reminded that I am dust.
I had to laugh at the picture, though. So much for humility...:-)
Guess what I heard a collegue retell yesterday ... She went to visit her boyfriend at work and saw one of his co-workers with an ash Wednesday mark on her head. She commented with attitude, "Well, somebody missed their eye with the mascara this morning!"
:o)

Isn't Lent supposed to emphasize bleak dreariness?
This may be shocking, but this was the first year I ever received ashes (although not the first year I was forgiven). What's worse is that it was kind of on accident.
However, don't give up hope on me becoming liturgical yet. It seems to be a huge deal for everyone else at Duke.
